2. Radda In Chianti
Stay
About the destination: Radda in Chianti is a beautiful medieval town enclosed in large defensive walls. Located up on a hill between the valleys of Arbia and Pesa, it has ancient origins. Inhabited since the 9th century, Radda was officially mentioned in a document from 1002. Its stone facades adds to the medieval look characterized by narrow streets and tower buildings. It is no wonder that Radda served as the capital of Chianti; its prime position served as a point of coordination between its neighbors Gaiole and Castellina. The picturesque panorama, the small town feel, the calendar rich with cultural events and the natural flavors of the land make Radda one destination that should always be part of an itinerary in Chianti. If you are looking for a holiday base a location between Siena and Florence, close to restaurants, major sites and good roads - then Radda makes sense all the way around. Radda in Chianti offers several options for your holiday planning: B&B suites to the authentic agriturismo experience.

3. Fonterutoli
Stay
About the destination: Fonterutoli (pronounce Fonterùtoli) is a hamlet of the Italian municipality of Castellina in Chianti, in the province of Siena, Tuscany. It is located in the heart of the Chianti area, along State Road 222 'Chiantigiana' just beyond Castellina in Chianti, in the direction of Siena. From here you can enjoy a unique panorama, seeing Siena and overlooking the landscape of the Valdelsa Senese. The locality has such ancient origins that it was already known in Etruscan and Roman times ('Fons Rutolae' and 'Fons Rutilant'). In 998, as also recalled by a plaque in the centre of the village, Otto III put an end to the disputes between the powerful dioceses of Siena, Fiesole and Arezzo, establishing borders and possessions. During the wars between Siena and Florence, it was the site of the agreements that put an end to the dispute over the Chianti territories. It is said that according to the agreements, the boundary was to be established at the meeting point between a Florentine knight and a Sienese knight who were to leave their respective cities at the first cockcrow: the meeting between the two knights was to take place near Fonterutoli. The castle of Fonterutoli is owned by the family of the Marquis Mazzei, who settled there as early as 1435. Its appearance has not changed much over the centuries, preserving some original buildings. Only the original castle was replaced by the manor house at the end of the 16th century.

It is located about 31 kilometres (19 mi) south of Florence and 42 kilometres (26 mi) north of Siena. Sitting in the Val di Greve, it is named for the small, fast-flowing river that runs through it, is the principal town in the Chianti wine district which stretches south of Florence to just north of Siena. Until recently it has been a quiet, almost bucolic town because it was, and still is, well off the main roads.
